The Accra Rd Matatu Stage at the junction of Accra Rd and Tom Mboya St has for many years been the city centre terminus for matatus heading to the Embakasi region of Eastlands, Nairobi. In early 2008, the Government ordered all Eastlands matatus to operate from the newly completed Muthurwa Bus Station, but after complying for a few months, some of the matatu operators resumed coming into the central business district (CBD). Some of the operators even got court orders allowing them to legally return to the city centre.
Most commuters preferred to use buses, which are still allowed into the CBD, rather than walk for 30-40minutes to Muthurwa, and face the security risks associated with that place.

When coming to the city centre from the suburbs, matatus going to Muthurwa Bus Station typically announce that they are going to tao (Town) or tao ndani (inside town), while those going to the CBD announce that they are going to Commercial. Being aware of this distinction can therefore save you a 30-40min walk to your destination in the city centre.
